COURSES - COSTA DEL SOL - Valderrama Golf
Course Summary: Par 72
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, Valderrama opened in 1985 and is Europes No. 1 course. Host to the Ryder Cup in 1997 and also to the Volvo Masters, Valderrama is the standard bearer for golf in Andalucia.
The Story:
Valderrama was originally known as "Las Aves" The owner and president, Jaime Ortiz-Patiño, took over in 1987 and with more land, invited Robert Trent Jones to return and transform the course, which he did successfully to create Valderrama as we know it today. It has evolved into a beautiful, powerful and unique golfing phenomenon.
The Course:
Valderrama is set amongst a cork oak forest on the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja. The fairways are quite flat and lined with trees while the greens are elevated and well protected by bunkers. It is challenging and many words have been used to describe it such as daring, dramatic, demanding etc. When you see the course on television it looks immaculate and perfectly manicured, marvellously it is like this during the whole of the year. The World famous 17th hole is a born-again hole, the outcome of much agonising and deliberation plus the inputs, separately, of Seve Ballesteros and Roger Rulewich, not to mention prodigious feats of engineering which make this one of the most exiting and famous holes you can find. Its natural amphitheatre makes for some great spectacle.
This is a truly beautiful course, and has to be ranked as one of the best in the world. The peaceful and tranquil setting clearly makes Valderrama the pride and joy of Jaime Ortiz-Patiño.
Quote from the designer:
“I think Valderrama is a classic championship golf course. It’s like Augusta… in about as good condition as any golf course can get."
